that tradition thing
Speak Up:You Have the Right to Rant and Rave
I enjoyed reading "the lottery" although one thing i did not appreciate in the text was the tradition of the people. I mean, who the hell would like to be stoned to death! Not me, definitely... Speaking of tradition, i would like to share my knowledge about the Filipino Tradition more popularly known as Sabong and why i believe it is harmful.
Sabong? Say What? FYI, sabong or cockfighting is considered one of the world's oldest spectator sports. <-- ergo, it's a tradition! Cockfighting has been around even before Jesus Christ was born. Cockfighting is very simple: Take two roosters that have an innate hatred toward each other, put them in close proximity and let them battle like feathered gladiators until one no longer fights back, which oftentimes is after his last breath. I believe sabong is an obvious act of animal cruelty. Sabong is a violation of "animal rights." Many do not accept the arguments of most cockfighters who say that sabong is a cultural tradition and a family sport. Sure, you could win a few hundreds or thousands of pesos. But at the expense of poor animals, not worth it? Think about it. They have rights too. They're no different from other animals living out their peacefully. Why not just cook them and make them fried chicken or adobo or afritada or something yummy. Well, that caught my appetite. haha But going back to "the lottery" and tradition, despite the many disadvantages and critics of cockfighting why haven't we put a stop to it. I mean, name me one place in the Philippines where they've put a stop to sabong. It's a part of our culture. You can't stop it.
- defy gravity.. take the leap
(this is my 1st blog... forgive me for whatever errors you see.)
